SAFETY PLANNING

HARMLESS

The National Service for Self Harm and Suicide Prevention

Harmless is a national service that specialises in the field of self-harm and suicide prevention.

At the heart of our service is a dedication to supporting people when they are struggling and finding ways for people to overcome distress and to move towards hope and recovery.

The following page will take you to a safety planning resource that we have developed in collaboration between our support team and the people we help. We hope that this safety planning tool will help people facing difficulties in relation to self harm and suicidality to think about finding a way through these difficult times, and to use the tool to reflect, find solutions and seek help.

You are not alone!

A few quick Q’s

WHAT’S A SAFETY PLAN?

A Safety Plan is a document that helps you to think through difficult situations, reflect on what’s going on, on how you’re feeling and what you need. It is there to be done before times of crisis in order to help you stay safe if things get worse and will look at what you might do to cope and manage or how to seek help when in a difficult place. The plan is brief, is in your own words, and is easy to read.

WHO SHOULD HAVE A SAFETY PLAN?

Anyone can have a safety plan because anyone can have periods of time when life feels really difficult. It can be particularly helpful for people who
have suicidal experiences and/or those who harm themselves to think through how best to stay safe through a safety planning process.

WHY BOTHER?

A safety plan isn’t going to fix all of life’s difficulties but what it can do is help you through some really tough times or in this case, communicate to others that you need some help.
